Who are the voices you have listened to throughout your life? Have they been Champions or Challengers?
We have all heard those words, “You’ll never make it.” “You’re dreaming.” “It isn’t possible, you’re going to fail.” They are usually from Challengers who do not want your best.
Words have the ability to motivate us or bring us down. What we do with the negative voices is a choice. Will we listen to them or challenge them?
A couple of years ago I hired an employee to work in my company. They had skills I wasn’t as proficient in that would greatly benefit my clients. It was a good fit for a couple of months until they began to minimize my opinions and question my intelligence. I began to feel bulldozed in my own company and no longer had a voice. As a result, I started to doubt my abilities and self-worth.
I was paralyzed with self-doubt. It took me months to muster up the courage to do what I knew was best for my business: Let them go.
“Pruning is strategic. It is directional and forward-looking. It is intentional toward a vision, desires, and objectives that have been clearly defined and are measurable. If you have that, you know what a rose is, and pruning will help you get one of true beauty.” Henry Cloud – Necessary Endings
Letting my employee go was difficult but it was the pruning I needed to grow as a business owner.
Freedom to Grow in Your Business
Fast forward to 2020, I had a conversation with a good friend who approached me with a business opportunity. I immediately shut him down because I didn’t feel qualified. He championed me and told me “When have you ever once been afraid to try something. You’ve always been the person to build your wings on the way down.” He was right, the Kristy he knew and the Kristy I was would never be afraid of a new opportunity. I realized I was still believing the lies that had been ingrained in me from my past experience. I walked away from that conversation feeling like a new person. My friend had granted me the last bit of freedom I needed to move forward by reminding me of who I really was.
How many times have you let someone control your decisions?
Have you let your Challengers hold you back from an incredible opportunity because you didn’t believe you were capable?
“Getting to the next level always requires ending something, leaving it behind, and moving on. Growth itself demands that we move on. Without the ability to end things, people stay stuck, never becoming who they are meant to be, never accomplishing all that their talents and abilities should afford them.” Henry Cloud – Necessary Endings
What do you need to prune in your life? Take those steps today. Have your New Year’s resolution be letting go of the lies that have hurt you. Imagine how that can lead to more freedom and growth in your life and business.
